Feb 28- In a rebuilding season, Arizona has slowly but surely improved each week, taking on some of the nation's best in a tough Pacific Desert Conference. If Saturday is any indication, those hard lessons from early in the year are starting to pay off for the Wildcats.
Taking on a Cal State Northridge (CSUN) side that they had not faced since pre-pandemic, the hosts got things started with quick-paced attack and Sylvia Bruzga touching down early to make it 5-0. Not to be outdone, Sylvia's twin sister Sophia would make her presence felt next, scoring a try of her own to give Arizona a 12-0 early lead. The barrage of tries would continue as Hooker Indie Jacobi's linebreak set up an Emma Cook score to make it 17-0 Wildcats. The Matadors would respond, taking advantage of two key Arizona penalties and scoring in the corner to make it 17-5 in the 36th minute.
At the half, Arizona focused on sharpening up the attack, and that paid off with great support leading to scores. A Nora McCarthy try made it 24-5 before a linebreak by Audrey Miller put Regan Parnell through for her first try and sealed things in the 60th minute. The long-range try and victory were a testament to the progress the team is making, progress that Head Coach Tatum Quimby was thrilled to see. "Our forwards did an amazing job of recognizing space and broke the defensive line on several occasions. The back line utilized their speed to slip past CSUN on the outside and put up several tries. The team really came together this weekend to pull off a well deserved win with lots of exciting moments. " said Quimby. A second try from Sylvia Bruzga would put the game away for the Wildcats, earning them their first win of the season going in to Spring Break.
Arizona has two important matches left after the break, with a trip to BYU before hosting Arizona State in the final game of the season.
